Mama always said...

My mom lived in the same county, almost exclusively, for the first 40 or so years of her life. She must have found the transition to a new community a bit jarring because during that time (and after, too) I remember her saying, "Never say anything bad about anyone. You never know who's related to who."
Tonight, I went to hear The Julliard Quartet at the Library of Congress tonight. Among other works, they played a new work premiered just over 6 months ago. About 45 seconds into the first movement, my companion (who shall remain nameless, but he's about my age, shaved head... you might recognize him if you saw him) looks at me and puts his hand out over his knee and shakes it. It was that universal "It's okaay" symbol. I did the noncomittal head-sway as my jury was still out. So, they finish out the piece and when the quartet took their bows they pointed into the audience to acknowledge the composer. As is often the case with new works, the composer was in the audience....two seats down from me. I hope he didn't see his hand gesture, but I don't know how he could have missed it. Not that it really matters, but it is funny. Just goes to show. "Never say anything bad about anyone."

Hyla, maybe I know the shaved head friend you are talking about. That is pretty funny. Thanks for the post. The test went well. Also if you thought my initial l in Hyla is for integrity post I wrote two more. Check it out. There's material there for at least a couple months :)
